October 4 – Aaron Nola carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and Kyle Schwarber produced his eighth multi-homer game of the season as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies clinched their first postseason berth since 2011 with a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday. The Phillies secured the third and final National League wild-card spot with their win, coincidentally in the same ballpark where they last clinched a postseason bid on Sept. 14, 2011. After retiring the first two batters of the seventh, Nola (11-13) lost his perfect-game bid when Yordan Alvarez dumped a first-pitch fastball into right…
NEW YORK, Oct 3 (Reuters) – An independent investigation released on Monday showed abuse and misconduct “had become systemic” in the U.S. top-flight National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and that the league, teams and the governing U.S. Soccer body failed to adequately protect players. NWSL was forced into a reckoning a year ago as a report from The Athletic outlined allegations of sexual abuse by former North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley, after speaking to more than a dozen players he had coached since 2010. The Athletic said Riley denied “the majority” of the allegations. The fallout engulfed the league, prompting…

LAS VEGAS – Toyota Motor is standing by its electric vehicle strategy, including hybrids like the Prius, following criticism by some investors and environmentalist groups that the company is transitioning too slowly to EVs. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, who has built a corporate strategy around the idea that EVs aren’t the only solution for automakers to reach carbon neutrality, said Thursday the company will move forward with plans to offer an array of so-called electrified vehicles for the foreseeable future – ranging from hybrids and plug-ins to all-electric and hydrogen electric vehicles. “Everything is going to be up to the customers to decide,” he…
Since the Dodge Charger was reintroduced in 2006, Dodge has been building a reputation for making muscle cars with big engines and bold and bright paint jobs. But it plans to discontinue the gas-powered Challenger and Charger and the V-8 hemi engines that power some of the most popular versions. Dodge’s recently debuted fully electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept is its attempt to retain the muscle car identity in an era when it’s becoming ever more challenging to sell a gas-guzzling sports car. In fact, it’s becoming more challenging to sell a car at all. SUVs and trucks are…
Shares of large technology companies suffered heavy losses on Thursday, dragging down many other U.S. stocks along with them, after analysts at Bank of America lowered Apple’s stock rating. Tech stocks have been pushed down all year as investors have rotated out of growth and flocked to more defensive assets to deal with higher interest rates and to get ahead of a possible recession. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the buying came after the worst two weeks since the onset of the Covid pandemic. Now the downward trend is back, with the Nasdaq off 2.8% on Thursday —…

The rental car giant — which in the last year has announced deals to purchase a total of up to 340,000 EVs from Tesla, Polestar and General Motors by 2027 — is working with a unit of BP to install thousands of new chargers at its U.S. locations. Under the deal, BP Pulse, the oil company’s EV-charging arm, will install the chargers and provide software and services to help Hertz manage its fast-growing fleet of EVs. While many of the chargers will be used to recharge…
Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs — and what made him do a ‘happy dance’
LAS VEGAS — Toyota Motor CEO Akio Toyoda last week simply stated what he would like his legacy to be: “I love cars.” Just how the 66-year-old racer, car enthusiast and company scion will be remembered regarding his approach to all-electric vehicles compared to gas-powered performance cars, like the Supra, or hybrids, like the once-groundbreaking Prius, will play out in the years to come. Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, plans to invest $70 billion in electrified vehicles over the next nine years. Half of that will be for all-electric battery ones. While it’s a substantial investment in EVs, it’s smaller than some competitors’…
DETROIT – General Motors’ third-quarter vehicle sales increased 24% compared to a year ago, when supply chain issues weighed more heavily on the company’s output. The Detroit automaker on Monday said it sold 555,580 vehicles from July through September, up from about 447,000 a year earlier, when sales were depressed due to Malaysia-related supply issues of semiconductor chips. The increase was in line with or higher than industry analysts’ expectations of an at least 21.6% increase. Regarding electric vehicles, GM said it plans to increase production of its Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV after the vehicles recorded their best quarterly sales ever at 14,709 units.…
The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), which holds trade shows for the TV industry, announced on Monday that it will file for bankruptcy. The organization said the pandemic had forced it to cancel its flagship events, leading to a drop in revenues and requiring it to draw on reserves. NATPE said it will restructure under Chapter 11, and that it still plans to hold its annual conference on Jan. 17-19, 2023, in the Bahamas. “NATPE is looking at all possible options to restructure, including raising funds through strategic alliances,…
